The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) is a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution designed to guarantee equal legal rights for all American citizens regardless of sex; it seeks to end the legal distinctions between men and women in terms of divorce, property, employment, and other matters. She is a member of the Democratic Party and was a former Chairwoman for the Democratic National Committee. Wasserman Schultz previously served in the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate, and was a national campaign co-chair for Hillary Clinton's unsuccessful 2008 run for president. She is the first Jewish Congresswoman elected from Florida. Her district covers much of southern Broward County, including a large portion of Fort Lauderdale.
