# Q (number format)

Q is a fixed point number format where the number of fractional bits (and optionally the number of integer bits) is specified. [1]

## Arithmetic logic unit

An arithmetic logic unit (ALU) is a digital electronic circuit that performs arithmetic and bitwise logical operations on integer binary numbers.

## Arithmetic shift

In computer programming, an arithmetic shift is a shift operator, sometimes known as a signed shift (though it is not restricted to signed operands).

## Binary scaling

Binary scaling is a computer programming technique used mainly by embedded C, DSP and assembler programmers to perform a pseudo floating point using integer arithmetic.

## Bit

A bit is the basic unit of information in computing and digital communications.

## C (programming language)

C (as in the letter ''c'') is a general-purpose, imperative computer programming language, supporting structured programming, lexical variable scope and recursion, while a static type system prevents many unintended operations.

## Fixed-point arithmetic

In computing, a fixed-point number representation is a real data type for a number that has a fixed number of digits after (and sometimes also before) the radix point (after the decimal point '.' in English decimal notation).

## Floating point

In computing, floating point is the formulaic representation which approximates a real number so as to support a trade-off between range and precision.

## Fraction (mathematics)

A fraction (from fractus, "broken") represents a part of a whole or, more generally, any number of equal parts.

## IEEE floating point

The IEEE Standard for Floating-Point Arithmetic (IEEE 754) is a technical standard for floating-point computation established in 1985 by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

## Integer

An integer (from the Latin ''integer'' meaning "whole")Integer 's first, literal meaning in Latin is "untouched", from in ("not") plus tangere ("to touch").

## Rational number

In mathematics, a rational number is any number that can be expressed as the quotient or fraction p/q of two integers, p and q, with the denominator q not equal to zero.

## Rounding

Rounding a numerical value means replacing it by another value that is approximately equal but has a shorter, simpler, or more explicit representation; for example, replacing £23.4476 with £23.45, or the fraction 312/937 with 1/3, or the expression √2 with 1.414.

## Texas Instruments

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) is an American electronics company that designs and makes semiconductors, which it sells to electronics designers and manufacturers globally.

## Two's complement

Two's complement is a mathematical operation on binary numbers, as well as a binary signed number representation based on this operation.
