Singapore Bus Service
Singapore Bus Services (Singapore Bus Service was a public bus operator in Singapore formed in 1973 from the merger of three private bus companies; the Amalgamated Bus Company, Associated Bus Services and United Bus. The government-sanctioned merger was undertaken to improve service standards of the bus transport system, which formed the backbone of public transport then. The fledgling company was listed on the Stock Exchange of Singapore in 1978 under the name of Singapore Bus Service (1978) Limited. With the impending shakeup in the public transport sector, and the shift towards the creation of multi-modal transport companies, Singapore Bus Services (1978) Limited changed its name to DelGro Corporation, and later ComfortDelGro Corporation, in November 1997. Bus operations and assets continued to be listed on the Singapore Stock Market under the name, Singapore Bus Services Limited, and was regrouped as a subsidary of ComfortDelGro. Between 1995 and 2000, a series of route handovers took place between SBS and TIBS. SBS gave up its Bukit Panjang (1995), Choa Chu Kang (1999) and Bukit Batok (2000) routes to TIBS, in exchange for the Sengkang and Punggol (1999) routes from TIBS. This was done as part of SBS's upcoming operation of the North East Line in the north east. The Sengkang and Punggol routes were previously owned by TIBS until they were given up to SBS in 1995. In November 2001, Singapore Bus Services Limited was renamed as SBS Transit when the company formally became a multi-modal transport operator after winning the contract for the rights to operate the North East Line (NEL).
