H-reflex

Index H-reflex

The H-reflex (or Hoffmann's reflex) is a reflectory reaction of muscles after electrical stimulation of sensory fibers (Ia afferents stemming from muscle spindles) in their innervating nerves (for example, those located behind the knee). [1]

Alpha motor neuron

Alpha (α) motor neurons (also called alpha motoneurons), are large, multipolar lower motor neurons of the brainstem and spinal cord.

Electricity

Electricity is the set of physical phenomena associated with the presence and motion of electric charge.

Electromyography

Electromyography (EMG) is an electrodiagnostic medicine technique for evaluating and recording the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles.

F wave

In neuroscience, an F wave is the second of two voltage changes observed after electrical stimulation is applied to the skin surface above the distal region of a nerve.

Hoffmann's reflex

In medicine, Hoffmann's reflex, (Hoffmann's sign, sometimes simply "Hoffmann's") is a finding elicited by a reflex test which can help verify the presence or absence of issues arising from the corticospinal tract.

International Space Station

The International Space Station (ISS) is a space station, or a habitable artificial satellite, in low Earth orbit.

Knee

The knee joins the thigh with the leg and consists of two joints: one between the femur and tibia (tibiofemoral joint), and one between the femur and patella (patellofemoral joint).

Muscle spindle

Muscle spindles are stretch receptors within the body of a muscle that primarily detect changes in the length of the muscle.

Patellar reflex

The patellar reflex or knee-jerk (myotatic) (monosynaptic) (American spelling knee reflex) is a stretch reflex which tests the L2, L3, and L4 segments of the spinal cord.

Reflex

A reflex, or reflex action, is an involuntary and nearly instantaneous movement in response to a stimulus.

Stretch reflex

The stretch reflex (myotatic reflex) is a muscle contraction in response to stretching within the muscle.

Type Ia sensory fiber

A type Ia sensory fiber, or a primary afferent fiber is a type of afferent nerve fiber.

Weightlessness

Weightlessness, or an absence of weight, is an absence of stress and strain resulting from externally applied mechanical contact-forces, typically normal forces (from floors, seats, beds, scales, etc.). Counterintuitively, a uniform gravitational field does not by itself cause stress or strain, and a body in free fall in such an environment experiences no g-force acceleration and feels weightless.
