Belmont Park

Belmont Park is a major Thoroughbred horse-racing facility in the northeastern United States, located in just east of the limits. Opened on May 4, 1905, it is operated by the non-profit New York Racing Association, as are Aqueduct and Saratoga Race Course. The group was formed in 1955 as the Greater New York Association to assume the assets of the individual associations that ran Belmont, Aqueduct, Saratoga, and the now-defunct Jamaica Racetrack. Belmont Park is typically open for racing from late April through mid-July (known as the Spring meet), and again from mid-September through late October (the Fall meet). It is widely-known as the home of the Belmont Stakes in early June, regarded as the "Test of the Champion", the third leg of the Triple Crown. Along with Saratoga in Upstate New York, Keeneland and Churchill Downs in Kentucky, and Del Mar and Santa Anita in California, Belmont is considered one of the elite racetracks in North America. The race park's main dirt track has earned the nickname, "the Big Sandy," given its prominent overall dimensions and the deep, sometimes tiring surface. Belmont is also sometimes known as "The Championship Track" because almost every major champion in racing history since the early 20th century has competed on the racecourse – including all of the Triple Crown winners. Belmont hosted its largest crowd in 2004, when 120,139 saw Smarty Jones upset by Birdstone in its Triple Crown bid.

Crafty Lace

Crafty Lace (foaled March 11, 1959 in Ontario) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who was voted Canadian Horse of the Year in 1962. Crafty Lace was bred by Frank C. Conklin at his Conklin Farms in Brantford, Ontario. He was sired by Crafty Admiral, the 1952 American Champion Older Male Horse. His dam was French Lace whose sire, Blue Swords, was a very good runner who finished second to Count Fleet in the 1943 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. On September 18, 1962, Crafty Lace was claimed for $7500 by trainer John Mooney for Buffalo, New York businessman Jeremy Jacobs. The horse ran second his first time out under Mooney's care then won four races in a row and set a Woodbine Racetrack record for a mile and a sixteenth on dirt. In his most important win Crafty Lace was ridden by Ron Turcotte to a victory in the Breeders' Stakes, the third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown series that is raced on turf.

Cup and Saucer Stakes

The Cup and Saucer Stakes is a thoroughbred horse race held annually in October at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Open to two-year-old horses foaled in Canada, it is currently run at a distance of miles on turf. The race was known as Mrs. Orpen's Cup and Saucer Handicap until 1947 and then the Orpen Cup and Saucer Handicap from 1947 to 1949. Raced from 1937 to 1952 on dirt at a distance of 1 mile 70 yards at Toronto's now defunct Long Branch Racetrack, World War II consolidations saw the race shifted to the Dufferin Racetrack from 1943 to 1945 before returning to Long Branch in 1946. In 1953 the racing distance was increased to miles and remained at that distance after moving to the new Woodbine Racetrack in 1956. Converted to a turf race in 1959, the Cup and Saucer was raced at miles from 1973 to 1982 but then reverted to its miles in 1983. Along with its dirt race counterpart, the Coronation Futurity Stakes, the Cup and Saucer Stakes is the richest race for two-year-olds foaled in Canada. The 1963 running was notable for who did not win as the future U.S. and Canadian Hall Of Famer Northern Dancer finished second. In the 1980s, Sam-Son Farm and their trainer James E. "Jim" Day came to dominate this event.
