A mercenary is an individual who is hired to take part in an armed conflict but is not part of a regular army or other governmental military force. The Varangian Guard (Τάγμα τῶν Βαράγγων, Tágma tōn Varángōn) was an elite unit of the Byzantine Army, from the 10th to the 14th centuries, whose members served as personal bodyguards to the Byzantine Emperors.
