BOOTES

BOOTES, the Burst Observer and Optical Transient Exploring System, is a network of astronomical observatories with sites in Southern Spain, New Zealand, China and Mexico (mostly 0.6m diameter telescope with EMCCD camera at the Cassegrain focus and a g'r'i'ZY filterset. The main goal of the network is to quickly observe transient events within few seconds/minutes of being detected by scientific satellites. BOOTES provides an automated real time observing response to the detection of Gamma Ray Bursts GRBs. Error box size depending, it uses wide field cameras (WFC), ultra wide field cameras (UWFC) and narrow field cameras (NFC) attached to small robotic telescopes or the telescopes themselves. To study GRBs it is of the utmost importance to perform prompt optical follow up observations, to detect longer wavelength transient emission associated to them. BOOTES can perform such follow ups. Its scientific objectives include: • Simultaneous and quasi simultaneous observations of GRB error boxes. • Detection of optical flashes of cosmic origin. • All-Sky monitoring with the CASANDRA cameras down to 10th mag every 60 s. • Monitoring of different types of variable objects (galactic or extragalactic) down to 20th mag in order to search for optical variabilitity. • Discovery of comets,, asteroids, variable stars, novae and supernovae. BOOTES is part, within the framework of an international collaboration led by Spain, which started in order to support the ESA’s satellite INTEGRAL with ground-based observations. The project also was focused to perform rapid follow up observations of events detected by several spacecraft (BATSE, BeppoSAX, RossiXTE, IPN, Hete-2, Swift and Fermi). Results in the GRB field are multifold: • Predetection images: they set up upper limits for any possible precursors. • Simultaneous images: the first was achieved last 20 February 2001, although no counterpart was detected. • Follow-up images: with several gamma-ray bursts being discovered or monitored starting several dozen of seconds after the onset of the event.

Carbon star

A carbon star is typically an asymptotic giant branch star, a luminous red giant, whose atmosphere contains more carbon than oxygen; the two elements combine in the upper layers of the star, forming carbon monoxide, which consumes all the oxygen in the atmosphere, leaving carbon atoms free to form other carbon compounds, giving the star a "sooty" atmosphere and a strikingly ruby red appearance.

Parallax measurements made during the Hipparcos mission provide an estimated distance to this star of around from the Sun. Epsilon Scorpii has a stellar classification of K1 III, which indicates it has exhausted the supply of hydrogen at its core and evolved into a giant star. The interferometry-measured angular diameter of this star, after correcting for limb darkening, is, which, at its estimated distance, equates to a physical radius of nearly 13 times the radius of the Sun. Presently it is generating energy through the nuclear fusion of helium at its core, which, considering the star's composition, places it along an evolutionary branch termed the red clump. The star's outer atmosphere has an effective temperature of 4,560 K, giving it the orange hue of a cool K-type star. ε Scorpii is classified as a suspected variable star, although a study of Hipparcos photometry showed a variation of no more than 0.01–0.02 magnitudes. It is an X-ray source with a luminosity of.

HP Lyrae

HP Lyrae is a variable star in the constellation Lyra, with a visual magnitude between 10.2 and 10.8. HP Lyr was first reported to be variable in 1935 by Otto Morgenroth of the Sonneberg Observatory. The range was given as 9.5 - 10.5 and the variability type only as long-period. In 1961, it was formally designated as a β Lyr eclipsing variable with two A type supergiants in a close orbit producing smooth continuous variations with alternating minima of different depths. The period was given as 140.75 days, covering two maxima, and both a deep primary minimum and a slightly less deep secondary minimum. In 2001 a request was made for observations of HP Lyr and shortly after it was reported that HP Lyr was likely to be an RV Tauri variable rather than an eclipsing binary. This was confirmed with a more detailed study published in 2002. Some authors still maintain that the spectral type and nature of variation mean HP Lyr is more likely to be an eclipsing variable. HP Lyr varies by about 0.5 magnitude over a "halfperiod" of 69.35 days. The formal period, defined for an RV Tauri variable from deep minimum to deep minimum is 138.7 days. Its spectrum changes from A2-3 at maximum to F2 at the deepest minima. The radial velocity changes are typical for the pulsations of an RV Tauri variable, but not compatible with a binary orbit. The spectral type and colour indicated that it was likely to be the hottest known RV Tauri star. Until 1960, the period of HP Lyr was very consistent at 140.75 days. Since then it was observed to reduce to below 140 days, probably quite suddenly. A survey of historic photography including the star showed that the period changed in 1962 or 1963, taking no more than four cycles to reach a new value of 138.66 days. A study of the elemental abundances of RV Tauri stars calculated that HP Lyr had a temperature around 6,300 K and typical abundances for an RV Tauri variable. It also revealed that the abundances were altered by dust-gas separation in circumstellar material. HP Lyr has been included in a catalog of confirmed post-AGB stars, highly evolved and on its way to becoming a white dwarf.

The unqualified term instability strip usually refers to a region of the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram largely occupied by several related classes of pulsating variable stars: Delta Scuti variables, SX Phoenicis variables, and rapidly oscillating Ap stars (roAps) near the main sequence; RR Lyrae variables where it intersects the horizontal branch; and the Cepheid variables where it crosses the supergiants.
