The Catalans (Catalan, French and Occitan: catalans; catalanes, Italian: catalani) are a Pyrenean/Latin European ethnic group formed by the people from, or with origins in, Catalonia (Spain), in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula. Francesc de Tamarit i de Rifà (Barcelona, Spain, 1584–1653) was the Marshal and the militar deputy of the Principality of Catalonia (1639-1641) voted by the catalan aristocracy, notable for his service particularly at the Battle of Montjuïc in 1641 where the force of the Catalan army defeated a much larger Spanish army.
