The UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has designated 168 World Heritage Sites in all of the 17 sovereign countries (also called "state parties") of Southern Europe: Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Macedonia, Malta, Montenegro, Portugal, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, and Vatican City as well as one site in the British overseas territory of Gibraltar. The Meteora (Μετέωρα) is a rock formation in central Greece hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries, second in importance only to Mount Athos.
